Lesley and Mattie
“About Lesley”
Everyone who has cancer has her own story, and this is Lesley’s.
On Saturday, December 29, 2007, Mattie Elizabeth Dalton was born to Lesley and Peter and her beautiful five-year-old sister Maranda. Mattie is a precious gift to her entire family, and she sure does keep everyone hopping.
In the early part of 2008, Lesley had a pap test that came back abnormal. After another test, her OB informed her that she had cervical cancer and would need a radical hysterectomy. Her doctor was hopeful that since Lesley never had any abnormal paps, they had caught the cancer early. In May after the surgery, she was informed that pending the biopsy results, her cancer would probably be staged at 1 or 2. But when the pathology came back positive for cancer in the lymph nodes, she was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer.
After digesting all of this, and trying to recover from major surgery, she went through six to eight weeks of pelvic radiation and chemo. Following a blood transfusion and a few other complications, she went into remission in early October of 2008.
That was great news, and things were beginning to really look up.

- Peter, Maranda and Mattie
In June of 2009, she had a cat scan that showed an enlarged lymph node. She then had a pet scan that showed the lymph node was in fact cancer. The lymph node was located high up in the wall of the abdomen. Cancer again, after only 8 months of remission — very tough to swallow.
Lesley’s oncologist referred her to a surgeon to review her options. The surgeon reviewed the films and decided that the best course of action was radiation in the abdomen area and chemo.
So what did Lesley do? She sucked it up and started her chemo on July 15, 2009, with radiation to start the following Monday.
During chemo on Wednesday, her oncologist came in to talk with her. He had presented her case to the tumor board that morning. With the help of many doctors, they went over her options. They decided that since Lesley’s cancer was so invasive, an additional round of high dose chemo following this round of radiation/chemo might be helpful in fighting against any cancer cells that could escape the radiation field. He also confirmed what she already suspected; that she did have stage 4 cancer. Just hearing those words “stage 4″ cancer is enough to upset anyone.
So how did we get here — to CarePages that is? I, Stacy, Lesely’s friend, started reading this website during her 1st round of treatments back in 2008. I wanted to try and understand what Lesley was going through. I stumbled across this website and I was able to follow so many people’s stories; especially those woman with cervical cancer.

- Mattie, 2 and Maranda, 7
I had always wondered how these woman got to the point where they were ready to go “public”, and share their stories. For us, now is the time. It’s just TOO painful to keep repeating the same story over and over again. Plus there are just not enough hours in a day to “LIVE” and talk with everyone who loves and cares for Lesley and Peter. So between Lesley, Peter and myself, we can keep everyone in the loop to keep all those prayers, support, and laughter coming their way.
